Women's Swim Surges to 3rd at NWC Champs

BOISE, Idaho -- A pair of runner-up finishes as propelled the Pacific Lutheran University women's swimming squad to third place in the team standings after day two of the 2026 Northwest Conference Championships held at the Idaho Central Aquatic Center.

PLU sat in sixth place after day one but has catapulted into third place, having racked up 268 points over the past two days. The Lutes own a slim five-point lead over both Whitman College and George Fox University who are both tied for fourth.
 
Harper Canessa was runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke, clocking a time of one minute, 5.67 seconds, finishing just 1.5 seconds back of NWC Champion Molly Konop from Whitworth University. Hannah Testa was eighth in the same event in 1:10.54 while Julissa Pernsteiner won the B final and was ninth over in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.42.

Emma Gassman was PLU's second runner-up of the day, taking second billing in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.13. Lola Chargualaf won the B final of the event, finishing ninth overall in 1:03.15.
 
Scout Hawkins and Riley Maher made waves in the 400-yard individual medley, finishing fourth and fifth overall, respectively. Hawkins claimed fourth place with a time of four minutes, 44.49 seconds, dropping over seven seconds from her qualifying time of 4:51.95 from earlier in the day. Maher also saved her best for the A finals, finishing in 4:44.54 and slicing off over six seconds from the morning swim.

Kei Nishikawa was seventh in the 200-yard freestyle, boasting a time of 2:00.25.

Emma Gassman was runner-up in the B final of the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 1:00.05 to take 10th overall.
 
Pacific Lutheran began the second session of the day with a fourth place showing in the 200-yard medley relay (1:49.39) and capped the day with another fourth place relay finish, this time in the 800-yard freestyle relay (8:03.04).
 
Whitworth University still leads the team standings with 488 points with the University of Puget Sound second among the nine teams with 319 points.

The 2026 NWC Championships conclude tomorrow with two more racing sessions.
