Gassman Powers Lutes to Third Place Team Finish

BOISE, Idaho -- Emma Gassman grabbed her second runner-up finish of the weekend, powering the Pacific Lutheran University women's swimming squad to a third place showing in the team standings at the 2026 Northwest Conference Championships.

PLU accumulated 410 points over the three-day meet at the Idaho Central Aquatic Center, placing third for the program's best showing since the 2022 championships. Whitworth University won the team title with 709 points followed by the University of Puget Sound with 477 points. Whitman College was fourth with 386 points at the nine team meet with George Fox University the top Oregon school, placing fifth with 381 points. Linfield University was sixth with 363 points followed by Willamette University in seventh (239 points), Lewis & Clark College in eighth (217 points), and Pacific University in ninth (103 points).
 
Emma Gassman grabbed a runner-up finish for the second straight day, placing second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:08.96 while Lola Chargualaf was eighth in 2:21.81.

Scout Hawkins placed third in the 1,650-yard freestyle, stopping the clock in 18:13.41 while Zara Vera Dodge was 12th in 19:39.87.

Six Lutes dotted the top 15 in the 200-yard breaststroke with Riley Maher headlining that crew with a sixth place finish in 2:31.34. Scout Hawkins was seventh in 2:31.82 followed by Harper Canessa in eighth (2:41.41). Julissa Pernsteiner won the B final, placing ninth overall in 2:31.45 with Hannah Testa 13th in 2:36.63.

Kei Nishikawa was seventh in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:17.82 with Chargualaf placing 13th after touching the wall in 2:32.00.

Karina Yevstifieieva was 15th in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing in 56.54.

The Lutes wrapped up the meet with a sixth place showing in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:40.36).

Saturday saw Harper Canessa finish runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.67 while Gassman was second in the 100-yard backstroke (59.13). The Lutes also had top finishes from Scout Hawkins (fourth- 4:44.49) and Riley Maher (fifth- 4:44.54) in the 400-yard individual medley, Nishikawa in the 200-yard freestyle (seventh- 2:00.25), and Hannah Testa in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.54).

The Lutes opened the meet on Friday with Maher sixth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.32) and Yevstifieieva seventh in the 50-yard freestyle (24.89).
