TACOMA, Wash. — The Pacific Lutheran University Athletic Department recognized 71 student-athletes for excellence on the field and in the classroom last week, earning induction into the Chi Alpha Sigma honors society.
Â
"PLU has a proud track record of high achieving student-athletes," said Athletic Director
Mike Snyder.
Â
"Our athletic history is well documented, but what we really take pride in is the academic successes of these student-athletes and how they go on to impact their communities after graduation. These 71 new inductees exemplify what it means to live our core value of Excellence not only on the fields, but in the classroom. I applaud their work ethic and am thrilled to welcome them to Chi Alpha Sigma!"
Â
The Lutes' 71 new inductees represent student-athletes from 17 varsity sport programs, including 12 from the women's lacrosse squad that just competed its first season as a varsity program.Â
Chi Alpha Sigma recognizes college student-athletes who receive a varsity letter in their sport, achieve junior academic standing or higher after their fifth full time semester, and earn a 3.4 or higher cumulative grade point average.Â
Â
Chi Alpha Sigma is the first and only nonprofit organization that was established to recognize collegiate student-athletes who excel both on and off the field of competition. Founded in 1996 by then DePauw University head football coach, Nick Mourouzis, Chi Alpha Sigma continues to provide outstanding student-athletes with an opportunity to become connected within a fraternal association that aligns their educational and athletic successes for a lifetime. PLU joined Chi Alpha Sigma in 2015.
Â
Last May, 58 Lutes were inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma.Â
Â
PLU is one of just four institutions in the State of Washington to have membership with Chi Alpha Sigma along with Division I Gonzaga University, University of Washington, and Division II Saint Martin's University. The Lutes and Willamette University are the only two Northwest Conference institutions that are members of Chi Alpha Sigma. PLU and the Bearcats are one of 12 NCAA Division III institutions on the West Coast to have a chapter of the honors society. Â
