SALEM, Ore. — The Pacific Lutheran University women's golf squad placed ahead of three Northwest Conference rivals on Sunday, closing the two-day Willamette Valley Cup with a sixth place team showing at Creekside Golf Club.

The Lutes finished one stroke shy of Bushnell University and fifth place, finishing the two-day tournament with a score of 687. The Lutes shot a 342 during Saturday's opening round before coming back with a 345 during Sunday's final round. PLU finished 19 strokes ahead of crosstown rival University of Puget Sound while also finishing ahead of league rivals Linfield University and Whitman College. 

"It was exciting that this was the first tournament in two years we had five athletes on the course!" said Head Coach Al Patterson.

"Jayda is an amazing golfer and will only get better and I was proud of the tournament Kate had."

Jayda Thomas headlined PLU's efforts, tying for 11th overall with a 161. Thomas was consistent during the tournament, shooting an 80 on Saturday and an 81 on Sunday. That included nine pars and one birdie on Saturday before collecting six pars and one birdie in round two. 

Kate Sabarillo tied for 29th, shooting a 170. Sabarillo started the weekend with an 83 before shooting an 87 on Sunday, finishing with 12 pars and one birdie over the two rounds.

Emily Alicea was 33rd with a 175 (89-86) while Maddie Downie was six strokes back in 40th with a 181 (90-91). Kathleen Pullin rounded out the Lute roster, shooting a 193 (101-92) to secure 49th overall. 

"Our next tournament is a one-day match against South Puget Sound and that should be a great way to build our confidence."

PLU is back in action next Sunday, competing a a one-day match play event against South Puget Sound Community College.
