PARKLAND - For the second time in as many weeks, the Pacific
Boxers defeated the Pacific Lutheran Lutes, 6-3, in a Northwest
Conference women's tennis match. This match was played Saturday
afternoon at the PLU courts.
The Boxers took two of the three doubles points and four of the
six singles points to improve their overall and conference records
to 2-3. PLU is now 0-6 for the season and 0-5 in the conference.
Cat Goya and Megan Yoshimoto combined to win the No. 1 doubles
match, and they also disposed of their PLU opponents in the top two
singles matches to lead Pacific. Goya and Yoshimoto started out by
beating Cora Wigan and Ashley Coats, 8-4, in
doubles. Later, Goya took the measure of Wigen at No. 1
singles, 6-4, 6-0, while Yoshimoto downed Coats, 6-1, 6-3, at No.
2.
PLU picked up its doubles win from Caitlyn Hoerr and Deanna
Elmer at No. 3, the duo knocking off Pacific's Stephanie Velligan
and Dawn Greene, 8-3.
Winning singles matches for the Lutes were Ali Burnside, who
topped Dayna Wong at No. 3, 7-6, 6-1, and Heidi Weston, who
knocked off Velligas at No. 5, 7-6, 6-4.
Pacific's Wong and Rachel Mizuno beat Weston and
Kristina Aarsvold at No. 2 doubles, 8-1, and Mizuno picked up a
singles win, topping Aarsvold at No. 4, 6-1, 6-4. In the other
singles match, PLU's Hoerr pushed Greene to a super tie-breaker at
No. 6 before falling, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9).
