TACOMA - Pacific Lutheran picked up its first women's tennis win
of the season on Saturday night and did so in convincing fashion
with an 8-1 Northwest Conference victory over the George Fox Bruins
at the UPS Tennis Pavilion.
Pacific Lutheran improved its overall record to 1-7 and its
conference mark to 1-6 with the victory while George Fox falls to
0-4 overall and 0-3 in the NWC.
The Lutes got off to a fast start by winning all three doubles
points. Ashley Coats and Cora Wigen took an 8-2 win at No. 1,
defeating Molly Beaumont and Mollee Robinson, and Kristina
Aarsvold and Heidi Weston were 8-4 victors at No. 2, beating Allie
Michelotti and Cara Griffin. The visiting Bruins, with only five
players, had to default to PLU's Caitlyn Hoerr and Deanna Ellmer at
No. 3 doubles.
In addition to winning by default at No. 6, PLU won four of the
five contested singles matches. Coats took a super tie-breaker from
Molly Beaumont at No. 1, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-2), and Heidi Weston did
the same at No. 5, beating Lily Abildayeva, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-4).
Picking up straight set victories for the Lutes were Wigen over
Robinson at No. 2, 6-3, 6-3, and Ali Burnside over Michelotti at
No. 3, 6-1, 6-4.
George Fox picked up its only point at No. 4 singles where
Griffith defeated Aarsvold, 6-3, 6-3.
