FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Ali Burnside and Caitlyn Hoerr both won
their singles matches but it wasn't enough for Pacific Lutheran as
the Lutes dropped a 6-3 Northwest Conference women's tennis match
to the host Pacific Boxers on Saturday afternoon.
The Lutes, who opened their season on Friday with a
non-conference loss at Seattle U., are now 0-2 for the season and
0-1 in the conference. The match was the season opener for the host
Boxers.
PLU picked up a point in doubles play when Heidi Weston and
Kristina Aarsvold defeated Dayna Wong and Megan Yoshimoto, 8-5, at
No. 3. The Lutes came close to getting another doubles point but
Cat Goya and Rachel Mizuno were able to hold off Ashley Coats and
Cora Wigan, 9-8 (7-4), at No. 1.
Burnside, playing No. 3 singles, beat Wong, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, while
Hoerr topped Dawn Greene 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7) in a super-tiebreaker
at No. 6 singles. Wigen pushed Yoshimoto to a third set before
losing 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, and Aarsvold dropped a
super-tiebreaker to Stephanie Villegas at No. 5, 1-6, 6-2, 1-0
(10-7).
