TACOMA - Pacific Lutheran picked up a win in both doubles and
singles play but could manage no more as the visiting Whitman
Missionaries took a 7-2 Northwest Conference women's tennis victory
on Friday afternoon at the UPS Tennis Pavilion.
Whitman, which beat PLU by a 9-0 score during the
first week of NWC play, improved its overall record to
6-3 and its conference mark to 6-2 with today's victory. The Lutes,
meanwhile, fall to 2-9 overall and 2-8 in the conference.
Ali Burnside and Deanna Ellmer battled Whitman's Charlotte Scott
and Dena Wessel in the third doubles match until the Lutes duo
finally prevailed 9-8 (12-10). In singles play, PLU's Cora Wigen
and Whitman's Hadley DeBree split sets, 6-1, 4-6, before Wigen won
the super-tiebreaker, 10-6.
Whitman opened the match with with wins at No. 1 and No. 2
doubles. Divneet Kaur and DeBree took the measure of Ashley Coats
and Wigen, 8-2, at No. 1, and Kate Kunkel and Emily Rolston topped
Tina Aarsvold and Heidi Weston, 8-5, at No. 2.
Other than Wigen's victory over DeBree, Whitman had its way in
singles play, losing only 11 games in the remaining singles
matches. Elise Otto, Kaur, Rolston, Kunkel and Scott all were
straight set victors for the Missionaries.
Pacific Lutheran returns to action at 3 p.m. Saturday when it
hosts conference leader Whitworth at 3 p.m. at the UPS Tennis
Pavilion.
