TACOMA - Pacific Lutheran built a 2-1 lead after doubles but was
unable to sustain that advantage and dropped a 5-4 Northwest
Conference women's tennis decision to the Puget Sound Loggers on
Sunday at the UPS Tennis Pavilion.
The match was the season finale for both teams, and as a result
of the Loggers' win they moved into a seventh-place tie with the
Lutes, both teams with 3-13 conference records. Pacific Lutheran
finished 3-15 overall while the Loggers ended up at 5-14.
The Lutes got off to a good start with wins at No. 1 from Ashley
Coats and Cora Wigen and at No. 2 from Ali Burnside and Tina
Aarsvold. Coats and Wigen beat Samantha Taylor and Madison Holtz,
8-5, and Burnside and Aarsvold topped Ada Yu and Katie Hurley, 8-6.
Puget Sound took No. 3 doubles with Ashley Dombrow and Devin Fields
topping Deanna Ellmer and Caitlyn Hoerr, 8-6.
The Loggers rallied for the win with victories in four of the
six singles matches. PLU picked up wins at No. 1 where Coats beat
Taylor, 6-3, 6-1, and at No. 4 where Aarsvold defeated Hurley 7-6
(7-5), 4-6, 6-3.
While Aarsvold won her match in three sets, the Loggers picked
up a pair of three-set victories to nip the Lutes. At No. 2
singles, Holtz topped Wigen 1-6, 6-1, 6-2, and at No. 6
Dombrow beat Hoerr 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3). The other two matches were
decided in straight sets with Yu beating Burnside at No. 3, 6-4,
6-1, and Fields defeating Ellmer at No. 5, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
