Whitman dropped only five games in doubles and swept through singles without dropping a set in defeating Pacific Lutheran, 9-0, in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match played Friday at Sprinker Recreation Center.

With the win, the Missionaries improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The loss dropped PLU to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in its conference opener.

Whitman freshman Courtney Lawless, who is regionally ranked in both singles and doubles, won at both No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles. She and teammate Maddy Webster defeated Leah Newell and Tina Aarsvold, 8-0, in the featured doubles match, and she came back later to beat Newell, 6-1, 6-0, in singles.

Courtney's sister, Morgan, teamed with Emily Rolston for an 8-1 victory over Cora Wigen and Valery Jorgensen at No. 2 doubles. Morgan, regionally ranked in singles, defeated Wigen, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2 singles.

The No. 3 doubles match was the closest of the three as Hannah Palkowitz and Lizzy Schiller beat Allison McClure and Katherine Patton, 8-4.

Kate Kunkel-Patterson defeated Aarsvold at No. 3, 7-6 (1), 6-3, in the closest of the six singles matches. Other singles wins went to Rolston at No. 4, Lizzy Schiller at No. 5 and Sara Finkleman at No. 6.

Pacific Lutheran returns to action at 12:30 tomorrow when it hosts three-time defending conference regular season champion Whitworth at Sprinker Recreation Center.
