Lutes Add to Season-Opening Winning Streak

Pacific Lutheran made it three wins in a row to open the 2013 women's tennis season on Friday with a 5-4 Northwest Conference win over the visiting George Fox Bruins at Sprinker Tennis Center.

The competition between the squads was about as close as you can get as four of the singles matches went to a third set, and one of them had two tiebreakers.

Tina Aarsvold remained unbeaten in both doubles and singles play this season. She and teammate Leah Newell won their No. 2 doubles match against Alyssa Emoto and Bethany Nguyen, 8-2. Aarsvold later came back to take her No. 4 singles competition in what was the closest match of the day. Going against Chantelle Hadeed, Aarsvold won the opening set 6-4 before Hadeed took the second set 7-6 (8-6). With the team victory hanging in the balance, the two players battled to another tiebreaker with Aarvsold coming out on top 7-6 (8-6).

Other PLU players winning in singles and helping the team overcome a 2-1 deficit after doubles were Samantha Lund, Newell and Allison McClure. Lund beat Molly Beaumont at No. 1, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, Newell topped Emoto at No. 2, 6-4, 6-2, and McClure took the measure of Ali Wittrig at No. 6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.

George Fox got doubles wins from Beaumont and Shaina Inn at No. 1 and from Krista Rey and Ali Diehl at No. 3, and in singles from Inn at No. 3 and Rey at No. 5.

PLU is back at it again at 1 p.m. tomorrow when it hosts the Willamette Bearcats.
