Biola Finishes Strong to Beat Lutes in Women's Tennis

LA MIRADA, Calif. - Biola closed with three straight victories in singles play to defeat Pacific Lutheran, 5-4, in a non-conference women's tennis match played Saturday afternoon at Biola Tennis Center.

With the win Biola improves its season record to 3-13, while Pacific Lutheran falls to 6-4 with the defeat.

The Eagles got a measure of revenge against the Lutes after PLU took a 9-0 victory her last season.

Pacific Lutheran took two of the three doubles matches and two of the first three singles matches and was on the verge of a team victory, but Biola battled back to win straight-set victories at No. 4 and No. 3 singles.

That tied the score at 4-4 and brought it all down to a very competitive contest at No. 5 singles. In the end, Biola's Lauren Vogel garnered a 7-6, 3-6, 7-5 triumph over Catherine Miolla.

PLU victories included Leah Newell and Tina Aarsvold at second doubles and Valery Jorgensen and Miolla at third doubles, both teams winning by 8-6 scores.

In singles play it was Leah Newell taking a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 2 and Allison McClure winning 6-0, 6-4 at No. 6.

Pacific Lutheran continues its four-match California spring break trip on Sunday with a match at Whittier College.
