PLU Women's Tennis Season Closes With Road Loss

SPOKANE - Pacific Lutheran ended its 2013 women's tennis season on Saturday by dropping a 9-0 decision to the host Whitworth Pirates at Scotford Tennis Center.

In beating the Lutes, the Pirates got a measure of revenge for an earlier 5-4 defeat to the Lutes in Parkland.

With the defeat, PLU ends its season 7-10 overall and 5-7 in the conference, a significant improvement over a season ago when the team won one match all season. Additionally, the Lutes ended a 27-match conference losing streak with a victory over defending NWC champion Linfield in the opening match of the campaign.

The Lutes, ranked No. 16 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Region poll, struggled in the final weeks and ended up losing seven of their final eight matches, including five straight down the stretch.

Double play opened with a Whitworth sweep, though PLU's No. 2 duo of Leah Newell and Tina Aarsvold took opponents Morgan McDivitt and Megan Wingfield to 9-7 before falling.

The Pirates finished with straight set wins in all of the singles matches. Aarsvold, the only senior on the team, had the closest match, losing to Wingfield by a 7-5, 6-4 count.
