Lutes open NWC season with 7-2 win over Lewis & Clark

TACOMA – Pacific Lutheran closed out an impressive opening weekend to the 2014 women's tennis season with a 7-2 win over Lewis & Clark in the Lutes' Northwest Conference opener Saturday afternoon at Sprinker Recreation Center.

Pacific Lutheran takes down a Lewis & Clark team that was ranked eighth in the preseason west regional rankings. The Lutes improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in conference competition, while Lewis & Clark falls to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the NWC.

Lewis & Clark won the opening match in both doubles and singles competition, but it was all Lutes from there. Megan Beyers had perhaps the most impressive showing for the Lutes on Saturday, sweeping Lewis & Clark's Gillian Lowe 6-0, 6-0.

The 4, 5 and 6 singles matches were never really in doubt, as Allison McClure won 6-2 and 6-3 over Makena McCluskey, Mariah Siemion won 6-2 and 6-1 over Allison Schneider and Emily Bower went 6-2 and 6-2 against Paloma Vizcaino.

The toughest singles match for the Lutes was Samantha Lund's win over Olivia Sweetman. The first set went to a tiebreaker before Lund claimed the 7-6 win, and she rolled from there with a 6-1 second-set victory. Claudia Lew gave L&C its lone singles win in the No. 1 matchup, defeating Leah Newell 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles action, the Lutes' team of McClure and Siemion grabbed a hard-fought 9-8 win over Sweetman and Lowe, and Beyers and Bower teamed up to take down Schneider and Grigsby 8-6. The Pioneers won the first doubles matchup, with Lew and McCluskey claiming an 8-0 win over Newell and Lund.

The Lutes head down to Oregon next weekend for two more NWC matches, taking on Pacific on Friday at 4 p.m. and facing Willamette at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
