Lutes earn close win over California Lutheran to snap four-loss streak

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Pacific Lutheran swept the doubles matches and pulled out a 5-4 nonconference women's tennis win over California Lutheran Monday afternoon to bounce back from Sunday's 8-1 loss to Whittier.

The win ended a four-loss streak for PLU and improved the Lutes' record to 7-4. They wrap up their spring break California trip Tuesday afternoon, taking on Occidental at 2 p.m.

Leah Newell and Samantha Lund got the day started out right for PLU as they defeated Rebecca Gold and Dana Raugust 8-4. Allison McClure and Mariah Siemion followed with an 8-6 win over Shelby Kubota and Lindsay Murphy, and Emily Bower and Megan Beyers teamed to defeat Katie Carroll and Kari Ayres 8-2 to give the Lutes a 3-0 lead heading into the singles round.

The Regals picked up wins in the first two singles matchups, with Gold narrowly defeating Lund 4-6 and 6-2 with a 10-4 super tiebreaker in the second singles match. Beyers and Bower gave PLU the match-clinching singles wins, as Beyers defeated Raugust 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 3 match and Bower took down Rebecca Drake 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 6 match.

Sunday's loss saw the Lutes put together a couple close singles matches against Whittier, but PLU was only able to pick up one match win against the Poets. Bower took down Ava Egan in a 10-1 super tiebreaker to close out a 7-5, 2-6 win. The No. 5 singles saw Siemion take Alexis Augustin to the brink before falling 11-9 in a super tiebreaker to wrap up a 6-4, 2-6 match.
