Lutes wrap spring break trip with 7-2 win over Occidental

LOS ANGELES – The Pacific Lutheran women's tennis team clinched a 2-2 split on its spring break California trip Tuesday afternoon, defeating Occidental 7-2 to claim its second win in as many days.

Pacific Lutheran started out strong by sweeping the doubles round and bounced back after Occidental took two wins in the first three singles matches to win the final three singles. The win improved the Lutes' record to 8-4 overall this season, heading into an April 4 Northwest Conference home match against Pacific.

Leah Newell and Samantha Lund picked up an 8-3 doubles win in the first match before Allison McClure and Mariah Siemion improved their doubles record to a team-best 7-4 with an 8-0 win. Megan Beyers and Emily Bower wrapped up a doubles sweep for PLU with an 8-4 victory.

The Tigers won the first and third singles matches, with Newell grabbing PLU's lone victory at the top half of the ladder with a 6-1, 6-0 singles win against Jesse Hernandez. McClure, Siemion and Bower wrapped up the win for PLU. McClure claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win over Lucy Malloch, Siemion won 6-2, 6-0 against Hannah Munkacsi and Bower downed Isabella Korfmann 6-2, 6-0.
