Lutes win five straight singles matches to down George Fox 6-3

TACOMA – Samantha Lund and Leah Newell began the day with a doubles win, and Pacific Lutheran won the final five singles matches to claim a 6-3 Northwest Conference women's tennis win over George Fox Saturday afternoon at Sprinker Recreation Center.

Pacific Lutheran's win improves the Lutes' hot start to the season to a perfect 5-0, including 4-0 against Northwest Conference competition. George Fox falls to 3-4 overall and 2-4 in the NWC. The Lutes take to the court next on Wednesday afternoon, hosting Bellevue in a nonconference matchup at 3:30 p.m.

Lund and Newell took down the GFU doubles team of Taylor Barnes and Chantelle Hadeed 8-2 to give PLU the early point before the Bruins won the next two doubles matches. George Fox took a 3-1 lead after Alyssa Emoto won the first singles match for the visitors, but the Bruins did not score another point in the match.

Lund got it started for PLU with a comeback win against Hadeed at No. 2, pulling off a close 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 win. Megan Beyers followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Taylor Barnes and Allison McClure took down Krista Rey 6-4, 6-2. The final two matches required tiebreakers, but Mariah Siemion defeated Megan Dahlberg 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 to clinch the team win for PLU and Emily Bower knocked off Ali Diehl 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 1-0 (10-4) to close out the day.
