TACOMA – Linfield handed the Pacific Lutheran women's tennis team its second consecutive 8-1 defeat Saturday afternoon, spoiling Senior Day for the Lutes at Sprinker Recreation Center.
In the final home match for Pacific Lutheran senior Leah Newell, Newell started the day out strong by teaming with Samantha Lund to defeat Caroline Brigham and Mackenzie Fraser 8-6 in the first doubles match. Unfortunately for the Lutes, that ended up as their only win of the day as Linfield won the next eight matches.
Newell pushed her singles match against Brigham to a tiebreaker in the opening set before falling 7-6, 6-1, and Mariah Siemion won the first set of her match against Marisa Kume before falling 5-7, 6-0, 6-2.
Pacific Lutheran falls to 10-6 overall and 6-4 in Northwest Conference competition, while Linfield improves to 11-2 overall and 8-2 in the conference. The Lutes wrap up the 2014 regular season on the road next weekend, taking on George Fox on Friday and Lewis & Clark on Saturday.
