Lutes move closer to NWC Tournament berth with 7-2 win over George Fox

NEWBERG, Ore. – Looking to wrap up the regular season strong and claim its first Northwest Conference Tournament berth since 2008, the Pacific Lutheran women's tennis team moved one step closer to that goal Friday afternoon with a 7-2 win against George Fox at the GFU Campus Courts.

With the win, PLU improves to 11-6 overall this season and 7-4 in conference play. The Lutes also complete the season sweep of George Fox after defeating the Bruins 6-3 in Tacoma last month; the Bruins fall to 7-11 overall and 3-8 in the NWC with the loss.

George Fox opened the match strong, claiming wins in the first two doubles matches. The Lutes turned the tables from that point on, however, as Emily Bower and Megan Beyers teamed to win the final doubles match 8-1.

Once the singles matches began, it was all Lutes. Leah Newell downed Alyssa Emoto 6-1, 6-4 at the top of the ladder, while Samantha Lund claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win against Krista Rey at No. 2. Beyers defeated Megan Dahlberg 6-1, 7-5 in the only match that required extra points, and Mariah Siemion clinched the Lutes' fifth win of the day with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ali Diehl. Allison McClure took a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Shelby Arnold, and Bower made it a singles round sweep for the Lutes with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ilsa Teppo.

The Lutes wrap up the 2014 spring regular season Saturday with a 1 p.m. match against Lewis & Clark in Portland. PLU defeated the Pioneers 7-2 in Tacoma back in February, and the Lutes will be aiming for a win to solidify their standing among the top four in the conference standings and claim a spot in the tournament.
