PLU Track & Field heads to UPS for J.D. Shotwell Invitational

PARKLAND – The Pacific Lutheran track and field teams head back to the University of Puget Sound campus this weekend for the J.D. Shotwell Invitational.

Lute hammer throwers will not have to travel far to compete, as the event will take place Friday at 12 p.m. at PLU. The rest of the events will be at UPS' Baker Stadium on Saturday, beginning with the women's pole vault at 10 a.m.

Four PLU individuals and two relay teams go into the weekend with the top seed times in their respective events. Samantha Potter tops the women's shot put rankings, while Jorgina Moore is No. 1 in the women's hammer and Kyle Peart is No. 1 in the men's hammer. I.V. Reeves ranks first in the men's 100, as do both the men's 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.

Six more Lutes rank second among athletes set to compete at the meet this weekend. Potter is second in the discus, while Madison Guscott is second in the 400 and Taryn Dee is second in the 400 hurdles. Alan Bell ranks second in both men's hurdle events – 110 and 400 – and Peart is second in the men's shot put. Marisa Gonzalez (shot put), Stephanie McFarland (javelin) and Marqui Makupson (100) all rank third on the preview list going into this weekend.

In last weekend's Peyton Scoring Meet the Lutes took home eight event titles and set four records. Both the men's and women's teams finished second in the meet, totaling 158 and 181 points respectively. In the throwing events Peart finished with two event titles and a new record in the hammer (186-11), and Potter set a new discus record with a distance of 132-3 meters. Peart's performance earned the senior NWC Student-Athlete of the Week honors. Dee placed first in the 400 hurdles, breaking the previously held record with a time of 1:06.52, while the 4x100 men's relay team shattered the previous record with their time of 42.52.

The Lutes will look to continue improving on their marks this season and qualifying for the Northwest Conference meet, which is fast approaching on April 25-26 at Baker Stadium.
