Lutes close out California sweep with 5-4 win over Biola

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Pacific Lutheran women's tennis team completed a three-match sweep during its spring break California trip, as the Lutes held off Biola 5-4 Wednesday afternoon at Biola Tennis Center.

Biola won the top two matches in both doubles and singles play, but Pacific Lutheran picked up the team win with victories in the third doubles match and the third through sixth singles matches.

Emily Bower and Emily Beemsterboer gave PLU its first win of the day in the third doubles match, defeated Brooke Sanford and Lauren Vogel 8-6. Biola's Madeline Heer and Kelsey Post defeated Caroline Dreher and Samantha Lund 8-4 in the first match, while Kathryn Ashford and Susan Carmichael knocked off Megan Beyers and Allison McClure 8-5.

Ashford defeated Dreher in the first singles match 6-4, 6-3, while McClure pushed Heer to a third set before falling 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Lund took down Carmichael 6-1, 6-1 in the third match, while Beyers defeated Post 6-2, 6-1 in the fourth match. Bower and Beemsterboer closed out the win for the Lutes, as Bower defeated Sanford 6-1, 6-4 and Beemsterboer defeated Vogel 6-4, 6-4.

Pacific Lutheran's third straight win improves the Lutes' record to 5-6 this season, while Biola falls to 3-12. The Lutes return to action April 4, when they will host a Northwest Conference match against cross-town rival Puget Sound at 1 p.m.
