Lutes clinch season sweep of Loggers with 9-0 shutout

TACOMA – The Pacific Lutheran women's tennis team claimed its fifth win in its last six matches and earned a season sweep of cross-town rival Puget Sound Sunday, defeating the Loggers 9-0 at Puget Sound Tennis Pavilion.

Caroline Dreher and Samantha Lund opened doubles play with an 8-4 win over Elizabeth Chao and Tresa Bild. Allison McClure and Megan Beyers defeated Alison Goo and Farrell Ahlf 8-2 in the second match, and Emily Beemsterboer and Emily Bower clinched the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win over Claire Fitzgerald and Tamara Runnicles.

The singles round was more of the same. Dreher had the closest match at the top of the ladder, outlasted Chao 7-5, 7-5. McClure followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Ahlf, and Lund defeated Bild 6-2, 6-3. Beyers took down Runnicles 6-0, 6-2, while Bower knocked off Goo 6-1, 6-3 and Beemsterboer defeated Fitzgerald 6-3, 6-2.

The win evened PLU's season record at 7-7 overall and improved the Lutes' conference mark to 3-7. It also marked the first time PLU swept a season series over UPS without losing a match since 1999.

PLU returns home to host Whitman April 18 at 1 p.m. before closing out the season against Whitworth on Senior Day April 19 at 10:30 a.m. at Sprinker Recreation Center.
