Lutes fall to No. 23 Whitman 8-1

PARKLAND – Emily Bower picked up the lone win of the day for the Pacific Lutheran women's tennis team as 23rd-ranked Whitman defeated the Lutes 8-1 Saturday afternoon at the PLU campus courts.

Sunny skies and 70-degree temperatures allowed the Lutes to play their first outdoor home match on campus this season, but Whitman came out on top to clinch the Northwest Conference regular-season title with an 11-0 record, 14-5 overall. PLU fell to 7-8 overall and 3-8 in conference play and closes out the season Sunday, when the Lutes will honor senior Allison McClure prior to the start of the match at 10:30 a.m. on the PLU campus courts.

Bower split the first two sets against Lindsey Broderick 6-4, 1-6 and outlasted Broderick 14-12 in the tiebreaker to win the No. 5 singles match. Courtney Lawless picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at the top of the ladder against Caroline Dreher, while Jenna Dobrin defeated McClure 6-1, 6-2 in the second match. Morgan Lawless took down Samantha Lund 6-2, 6-2 in the third match, while Allie Wallin won the fourth over Megan Beyers 6-2, 6-1, and Alexandra Sigouin defeated Emily Beemsterboer 6-4, 6-3 to wrap up singles play.

The two Lawlesses teamed to defeat Dreher and Lund 8-2 in the first doubles match. Wallin and Sigouin defeated McClure and Beyers 8-4 in the second match, while Lindsey Brodeck and Jenna Gilbert claimed an 8-3 win over Bower and Beemsterboer.
