Whitworth holds off Lutes 5-4 in PLU's season finale

PARKLAND – It came down to a tiebreaker in the fifth singles match, but Whitworth held off Pacific Lutheran 5-4 in the Lutes' women's tennis season finale Sunday at the PLU Campus Courts.

PLU wraps up the 2015 season with a 7-9 overall record and a 3-9 Northwest Conference mark, while Whitworth improves to 9-8 overall and 8-4 in the NWC.

Caroline Dreher and Samantha Lund picked up PLU's lone win in the doubles round, outlasting Taylor -Pena and Annabelle Burns 9-8 with a 7-4 tiebreaker to give PLU the point. Bella Hoyos and Saryn Mooney defeated Allison McClure and Megan Beyers 8-1 in the second match, while Caylee Lamm and Morgan McDivitt defeated Emily Bower and Emily Beemsterboer 8-4 in the final doubles contest.

The Lutes took the top two singles matches. Dreher knocked off Hoyos 6-4, 7-5 at the top of the ladder, and McClure capped her PLU career with a 4-2 win as Pena retired from the match. Mooney defeated Lund 6-1, 6-2, and Burns picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Beyers. Beemsterboer won the sixth singles match 6-2, 6-2 over Lamm.

The decisive contest took three sets and a tiebreaker. McDivitt picked up the first set 6-2 over Bower before Bower tied it up with a 7-5 win in the second set. McDivitt clinched the win for herself and her team with a 7-6 win on an 8-6 tiebreaker in the third set to close out the day.
