Nationally-ranked Lewis & Clark ends Lutes' undefeated conference start

TACOMA – Pacific Lutheran opened the day with a pair of doubles victories, but 29th-ranked Lewis & Clark used the singles round to claim a 6-3 Northwest Conference women's tennis victory over the Lutes Saturday afternoon at Sprinker Recreation Center.

"The team competed very well today," PLU head coach Lorrie Wood said. "These Lutes rose to the challenge and have taken their games up a notch. I am proud of how they battled out there today."

PLU sealed two close victories in the first and third doubles to take a 2-1 advantage into the singles round of play. Caroline Dreher and Samantha Lund teamed to defeat Christine Eliazo and Claudia Lew 8-5 in the first match, and Emily Bower and Emily Beemsterboer teamed to down Vika O'Brien and Carla Thomas 8-6 in the third match. Lewis & Clark's Aurora Garrison and Kacey Incerpi won the second match 8-0 over PLU's Megan Beyers and Ingrid Ericksen.

Lewis & Clark bounced back to win the first five singles matches. Lilly Le picked up PLU's lone victory in the singles round, battling Thomas in the sixth matchup for a close 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) victory. Lund nearly pulled off a singles win over Incerpi in the second spot, winning the first set 6-4 and forcing extra points in the third set after Incerpi evened it up with a 6-0 victory. Incerpi closed out the win with a 7-5 third-set performance.

Dreher fell 6-2, 6-3 to Summer Garrison at the top of the singles lineup, while Eliazo defeated Beyers 6-0, 6-2 at number three. Lew defeated Bower 6-2, 6-1 in the fourth singles slot, and O'Brien defeated Beemsterboer 6-0, 6-1 in the fifth match.

PLU will look to bounce back from its first loss of the spring season Sunday, as the Lutes host George Fox at Sprinker Recreation Center. Match time is set for 10:30 a.m.

"We're looking forward to our match with George Fox tomorrow morning," Wood said.
