Lutes hold off Coyotes for tight 5-4 women's tennis victory

TACOMA – Pacific Lutheran closed out a women's tennis weekend sweep Sunday, as the Lutes edged College of Idaho 5-4 in nonconference action at Sprinker Recreation Center.

"I'm proud of the way the Lutes competed today," PLU head coach Lorrie Wood said. "They played hard, and they played smart."

Caroline Dreher and Megan Beyers gutted out a 9-8 (7-3) win over Allie Boyd and Megan Huffman in the number one doubles match to give the Lutes their first point of the day. College of Idaho took the other two points in the round, as Erin Huffman and Hailey Boyd defeated Emily Bower and Emily Beemsterboer 8-4, and Laura Humphreys and Vanessa Almaraz defeated Lilly Le and Ingrid Ericksen 8-5.

The Lutes picked up four wins in the singles round to clinch the team victory. Dreher topped the lineup with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Megan Huffman. Beyers won the first set 6-3 in the second match against Allie Boyd, but Boyd followed with a pair of 6-3 set wins.

Beemsterboer defeated Humphreys 6-4, 6-0 in the fourth singles match, and Le defeated Hailey Boyd 6-3, 6-4 in the fourth match. Heidi Kim fell to Almaraz 6-3, 6-2 in the sixth match, but Bower out-lasted Huffman 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 in the third singles match to seal the win for the Lutes.

"Emily Bower pulled out a very close marathon three-set match at number three singles that won the match for us," Wood said. "And our number one doubles team of Caroline and Megan shined today to earn us a point in the doubles round."

The two weekend home wins improve the Lutes' record to 4-3 heading into next week's trip to Oregon. The Lutes visit George Fox Sunday, March 13, at 11 a.m.
