LAKEWOOD, Wash. -The Pacific Lutheran University women's tennis squad opened the lid on the spring season on Saturday afternoon, falling 9-0 to Division I Eastern Washington University in a dual match at the Sprinker Recreation Center.
"I'm proud of the way the team competed," said Head Coach Lorrie Wood. "Eastern is a strong team but the Lutes hung in there and got better throughout their matches. This was a good first match. The team played hard and now we know which skills we need to work on in the coming weeks."
The Lutes' (1-1) Kristi Floyd and Bayley Gochanour tested the Eagles' (1-0) No. 2 doubles tandem of Zoey Nelson and Faye Worrall before ultimately falling 8-3 while Caroline Dreher and Hannah Jeffries stumbled 8-2 at No. 1 doubles.
In singles, Dreher battled Janaya Smith at No. 1, providing stiff resistance before ultimately succumbing, 6-2, 6-4. Jeffries dropped her first singles match of the season at No. 2 to Rylee Braeden while Floyd fell by a 6-0, 6-1, scoreline at No. 4.
PLU return to the court on Feb. 3, traveling to Salem, Oregon for a non-conference tilt against Willamette University.
