TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University women's tennis team begins its spring season this weekend, making the drive across town to face the University of Puget Sound.
The team has put in a lot of work this past year to get ready for the season.
"We leave lifting sessions and practices extremely tired, but without complaints and always with a smile," said senior
Kristi Floyd who is an experienced veteran now in her fourth year on the team.
As the excitement for starting the season begins to build, Floyd is excited to see where the team is and how much improvement they have made in the offseason.
"I'm looking forward to seeing our team progress. So far this season we have been very dedicated to strength training and targeting specific aspects of our match-play," said Floyd. "I'm really curious to see how this translates and am excited to play in a match setting again!"
With a new season ahead and new opportunities presenting themselves, the team also has new goals in sight.
"For the team, we have talked about pushing hard for every point and I want to see this implemented in matches. So that we do not give up points, and leave everything on the court."
Not only a leader on the court, Floyd takes the same passion and drive into the classroom as a biology and environmental studies double major. Graduating this May, her focus is on the conservation and resources management field.
"I'm a Biology and Environmental Studies double major so a lot of time is allotted to studying. However, I do try to make time for hikes on weekends when possible, spending time with friends, and cooking or baking!" said Floyd. "Right out of college I will most likely be taking biological technician jobs in order to build up my work experience!"
As a senior, Floyd has only appreciation for the tennis program and the people apart of it here at PLU.
"It has been truly amazing to be instantly part of a tight-knit group upon arriving at PLU. Over time as teammates have come and gone, it has proven to be incredibly inclusive. I still hang out with teammates that have graduated and will continue to keep in contact with those at PLU after I'm gone next year," said Floyd.
"The thing that I'm most grateful for though, is our teams' incredible positive attitude. It is no understatement when I say that this has been the most positive community I have ever been involved in. We continuously cheer each other on, support each other, and always take the optimistic route. It's something that is very hard to find, and I'm so glad to have been a part of it."
And that positive attitude is something the team will bring in full force on Saturday against Puget Sound. Matches are slated to get underway at 10 a.m.
