TACOMA, Wash. – Michelle Batin netted a single victory but the Pacific Lutheran University women's tennis squad was unable to keep pace with Whitman College on Saturday, dropping an 8-1 decision to the Northwest Conference rivals on senior day.
Batin fought for her 7-5, 2-6, 10-8 victory over the Blues' (8-6, 5-1 NWC) Audrey Grigore at the No. 5 singles.
Bayley Gochanour fell, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1 while Kristy Floyd succumbed to Mary Hill, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2.
In doubles, the Lutes' (2-13, 0-7 NWC) No. 2 tandem of Gochanour and
Taylor Stokes nearly pulled out the win, getting edged 8-7 while
Kylie Rademacher and
Lauren Kearney fell 8-4 at No. 3.
"We faced a tough Whitman team today," said Head Coach
Cheri Campbell. "I am proud of the way the Lutes fought, especially Michelle who came away with a win in a 3
rd set tie-break. We celebrated our seniors at the start of the match and ended with Michelle's win. Now we have the week to prepare for our last match of the season, next Friday at Whitworth."
The Lutes travel to Spokane to take on the Pirates Friday at 10 a.m.
