WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran University men's golf team surged up the team standings on Monday, closing out the fall season with a fourth-place finish at the Confluence Classic.
"Day one was a very solid performance at Veteran's Memorial. Josh led the way for us and we took advantage of the par 5's and shorter par 4's," said Head Coach
Tyler Copp.
"Day two was by far our best performance of the fall season. Not only did we post our low round of the season, but we did it under very tough weather conditions. Our guys made no excuses and put on a show."
The Lutes sat sixth overall after round one on Sunday, shooting a 303 before shaving off five strokes during Monday's final round. PLU carded a 297 on Monday and finishing with a two-day tally of 600 to place fourth at the 13-team invitational held at the Veteran's Memorial Golf Course and the Wine Valley Golf Club.
Joshua Clogston paced the Lutes, placing fourth overall after firing off a 143. Clogston carded a 72 on Sunday before shooting a one-under 71 during Monday's final round.
Koen Solis was the second Lute inside the top 10, shooting a 146. Solis shot a 76 on Sunday before shaving off six strokes the following day, carding a 70.
"Clogston's day two was four under par through five holes led to an even par round. Scores of even both days are another stamp of validation of being one of the best players in our region."
"Solis shooting a two-under 70 was our lowest score of the fall season. We're very excited about his momentum heading into the spring."
Josh Cross was 24th with a 152, shooting a 76 both days while
Hunter Olson (79-82) and
Cole Van Duyn (82-79) tied for 56th, both finishing with a 161.
"What I'm most happy with is how our team took four scores in the 70's both days, A team effort led us to a very good score of 600 in a loaded field."
Playing his final rounds before graduating in December,
Coleby Loveness shot a 175 (89-86), improving by three strokes from day one to day two.
Willamette University's Jack McMullin earned medalist honors, shooting a 139 and guiding the Bearcats to the team title.
The Confluence Classic was the Lutes' final tournament of the fall. PLU finished third at the Pacific Invitational while placing fifth at the NWC Fall Classic.
