Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – The Pacific Lutheran University women's tennis team came up empty in their trip to Portland on Sunday. The Lutes were defeated by Lewis & Clark College 9-0 in their Northwest Conference opener.
"We showed we are improving with each match," said PLU Head Coach
Cheri Campbell. "This young team continues to make strides on the court. The scores don't reflect the good points that we played during the match.
Lilian Nguyen and
Meggie Burnett stepped up their game against solid opponents.
Libertad Sarmiento switched her mindset and played a solid second set."
Ella Burriss and
Taylor Stokes won three games at the top spot in the doubles order, while
Tianna Jeffries and
Meggie Burnett won a pair at the No. 2 slot.
In singles action, it was
Lilian Nguyen who had the best showing. The junior lost the opening set 7-5 and the second set 6-3.
Libertad Sarmiento battled as well and won five games at the No. 6 position.
PLU (2-7, 0-1 NWC) will return to Sprinker Recreation Center when they host Whitman College on Saturday and Whitworth University on Sunday. First serve against the Blues is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
