Complete USTFCCCA Poll
TACOMA, Wash. - The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its second installment of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Rating Index on Tuesday with the Pacific Lutheran University men's track & field program ranking 17th.
The Lutes accumulated 54.27 points in the week two rating to secure 17th nationally, falling just over five points shy of 16th-ranked and Northwest Conference rival George Fox University. PLU and George Fox are the only two conference programs to be ranked in the national poll.
The Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges maintains a hold on the top spot, racking up 197.72 points with Rowan University second with 166.47 points. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges is third (150.74 points) with Carnegie Mellon University (130.79 points) and Wartburg College (109.59) rounding out the top five.
The computer rankings were first introduced during the 2011 season. Mathematical formulae based on current national descending-order lists in all events are used to compile a team's ranking. The purpose of the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potential of achieving the top spots at the national-championship level.
The Lutes won four events and were runner-up in seven more on Saturday at the CSUN Invitational. That included
Darius Chaffin winning the javelin and
Hezekiah Goodwin placing runner-up in the 800-meters. Both Chaffin and Goodwin were recognized by the NWC on Tuesday, earning NWC Field Athlete of the Week and NWC Track Athlete of the Week, respectively.
Pacific Lutheran is back in action this weekend, hosting the PLU Invitational.
