PLU Closes Out California Trip with 2-0 Shutout Win Over Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. – A pair of second-half goals gave the Pacific Lutheran women's soccer team a split on its California trip, as the Lutes shut out Whittier 2-0 Sunday at Graham Soccer Field.

It was a bounce-back performance for PLU to improve the Lutes' record to 2-2 after falling in the 109th minute to Occidental on Saturday. The Lutes return home for their next contest, as they will host cross-town rival Puget Sound on Sept. 14 at 12 p.m.

"I was really proud of the girls," PLU head coach Seth Spidahl said. "Obviously we had a very emotional loss yesterday and with the hot temperatures it was a really draining day. So for us to bounce back on the day after and actually have some quality soccer, some good possession and create some good chances on goal was a great character game for us."

Both teams finished the first half with five shots, but none found the net as the match remained scoreless at the break. That changed just one minute into the second period, as Kaylie Rozell took a lob pass from Blake Warner right outside the box and knocked it in to give the Lutes the lead. Courtney Randall added an unassisted goal in the 80th minute to reach the final score of 2-0.

Pacific Lutheran finished the match with a 16-10 shot advantage, with goalkeeper Marisa Gonzalez making four saves to earn the shutout. A total of six yellow cards were handed out throughout the match.

"It was a physical, scrappy game, but we kept our cool and competed really well," Spidahl said. "I was really proud of the composure we kept while still maintaining a very physical level. Certainly we're happy to leave California on a positive note, and we're excited to play at home in front of our home crowd."
