TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University women's swimming team was simply dominant on Friday night, winning all 11 events en route to a 160-45 victory over Willamette University to open up the Northwest Conference dual meet season.
The Lutes (1-1, 1-0 NWC) opened the day with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay with
Kiyomi Kishaba,
Whitney Mundle,
Bailey Hamilton, and
Lauren Kearney finishing the race in one minute, 53.65 seconds, winning by nearly three seconds and setting the tone for the rest of the night.
"It was a solid start to the conference dual meet season," said Head Coach
Matt Sellman. "The team was excited and enthusiastic all night. We were definitely a little rough in the water to start the meet, but got stronger as the meet went on. We had some really good sprints and we expect to have a better day tomorrow."
PLU went one-two-three in the 1,000-yard freestyle with
Taylor Bingea the first to touch the wall in 11:33.90 followed by Allie Burke (11:39.74) and
Ingrid Straume (11:46.16). It was another top three sweep in the 200-yard freestyle with
Emma Brownrigg taking top billing in 2:05.81 followed by
Hannah VanHeyningen (2:06.32) and
Gabriella Creaver (2:10.60).
Lauren Kearney won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.69 while
Kaycee Simpson (4:45.03),
Kylie Webb (5:03.29), and Alex Shannon (5:04.42) claimed the top three spots in the 400-yard individual medley.
Hamilton was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.48) while Simpson claimed her second win in the 100-yard freestyle (56.33) pacing another one-two-three Lute finish with Brownrigg second (57.03) and
Victoria Nguyenle third (57.59).
Kishaba took the 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.16 while
Taylor Bingea (5:40.52) edged teammate Alex Shannon (5:42.27) to win the 500-yard freestyle. Nguyenle (1:09.50), Straume (1:12.90), and
Whitney Mundle (1:13.76) claimed the top spots in the 100-yard breaststroke while Simpson, Brownrigg, Hamilton, and Kearney closed the night with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, touching the wall in 1:44.04.
PLU returns to the pool tomorrow afternoon, hosting Lewis & Clark College at 1 p.m.
