WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University women's swimming team suffered its first blemish of the Northwest Conference dual season on Friday night, stumbling 114-91 in a nail-biter against rival Whitman College.
"This meet was exactly what we anticipated," said Head Coach
Matt Sellman. "When we swim Whitman, it's always a barn-burner and every race is exciting and hard fought."
The Lutes (3-1 NWC) kicked off the meet with a victory in the 400-yard medley relay with
Kiyomi Kishaba,
Victoria Nguyenle,
Kaycee Simpson, and
Lauren Kearney swamping the competition by finishing in four minutes, 4.02 seconds, owning a more than four-second edge on the runner-up Blues.
Simpson secured her second event win in the 200-yard individual medley, touching the wall in 2:14.63 with Nguyenle in hot pursuit, clocking a time of 2:18.01, before winning the 200-yard butterfly in 2:10.64 for her third win of the evening.
Kishaba bested the field in the 200-yard backstroke, turning in a time of 2:10.23 while Nguyenle led the pack in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in 2:28.08.
Bailey Hamilton was second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.30) while the Lutes' 400-yard freestyle relay was runner-up in 3:55.69 to cap off the meet.
"Tonight was a lot of fun, we had some great swims and many that were a challenge to finish with how tired and beat up we are from winter training."
"It was a great way to start the new year with a close meet that went down to the last relay. We left the pool excited about where we are and looking forward to keeping good momentum in our training and racing these last few weeks leading up to the NWC Championships."
The Lutes are back in the pool tomorrow at 1 p.m., facing Whitworth University in Spokane.
