Lute Salute: Mitchell Dover

TACOMA, Wash. - Throughout the rest of the semester, GoLutes.com will profile the Pacific Lutheran University senior student-athletes involved in spring sports that had their seasons cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Today's installment features PLU men's golf student-athlete Mitchell Dover.

Mitchell Dover's athletic career at PLU may be over, but the friendships he's made will last him a lifetime.

A member of the Lute men's golf team for the past four years, Dover has cherished all the time spent with his teammates. One of his favorite memories was watching teammate Ryan Pearson make a winning 25-foot birdie putt in their last tournament this spring.

Dover also has a competitive spirit, saying he'll never forget winning the UPS invitational every year. He is also grateful for the opportunity to compete at the NCAA Division III Championships in Florida his freshman year, and the coaches and athletes who have been alongside him every step of the way.

"My teammates and coaches have each individually impacted me in different ways, but as a whole I know that I have made lifelong friends and for that, I will always be grateful," Dover said.

Dover became a leader in the Lute athletic community as Vice President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Outside of intercollegiate athletics, Dover still found himself immersed in sports, whether as a spectator or a participant in PLU's intramural sports program. He recalled being crammed into a dorm during his sophomore year watching the US Women's Hockey Team, and everyone going crazy when the team won the gold medal in a shootout.

On the IM fields on campus, Dover collected a staggering 103 wins across various sports, winning eight IM titles, finishing runner-up seven times, and third place an additional six occasions.

Above all, Dover believes his athletic experience has prepared him to be an effective member of a team.

"I would say more than anything that athletics at PLU has taught me how to work hard towards a goal within a team," Dover said.

Dover's time at PLU saw the Lutes hoist two Northwest Conference titles (2017 and 2018) while making two trips to the NCAA Tournament, culminating with a 16th place finish at the 2018 national tourney, the program's best ever finish at the NCAAs. The North Bend, Washington native finished his career with a 80.61 average, carting a career-best round of 75 at the Collegiate Open at The Home Course in 2017.

A Business Administration major with a concentration in Human Resources and Management, Dover has already accepted an HR position at Target where he will begin working after graduation.
