Chan-Orcutt Victory Headlines NWC Sprints

TACOMA, Wash. — Sidney Chan-Orcutt won the 50-yard freestyle to headline the season-opening Northwest Conference Sprint Pentathlon on Friday night at the PLU Pool. The Lute women finished runner-up at the event with the PLU men placing fifth overall.

Sidney Chan-Orcutt topped 80 other swimmers in the 50-free, touching the wall in 25.70 seconds to take the win by a razor-thin five-hundredths of a second. Chan-Orcutt additionally placed fifth in the 50-yard butterfly (28.17), sixth in the 100-yard individual medley (1:04.31), seventh in the 50-yard breaststroke (33.56), and 11th in the 50-yard backstroke (30.68). 

Malia Wisham was runner-up in both the 100-yard IM (1:03.32) and the 50-yard breaststroke (32.38) while logging a 10th place showing in the 50 free (26.54) and 13th place effort in the 50 fly (28.93). 

Annika Eisele was second in the 50 back (28.90) and third in the 50 fly (27.76) while also placing 12th in the 100 IM (1:05.66). Makenzie Chan-Orcutt was sixth in the 50 breaststroke, clocking a time of 33.56 while placing 13th in the 100 IM (1:05.95).

On the men's side, Tyler Tanaka made his Lute debut in style, finishing sixth in the 50 breaststroke in 28.85 while also placing seventh in the 100 IM (56.34) and 12th in the 50 free (23.02). Devin Stanley placed seventh in the 50 backstroke, touching the wall in 26.52 while finishing eighth in the 50 free (22.66), placing 10th in the 100 IM (57.02) and 12th in the 50 fly (24.77). 

Na'inoa Loo was 10th in the 50 breaststroke (29.73), 12th in the 50 back (27.16), and 15th in the 100 IM (57.99) while Charlie Cutter placed 15th in the 50 free (23.18).

The Lute women finished with 171 points to secure second overall among the seven NWC squads in attendance, enjoying a 47.5-point gap on third place University of Puget Sound. Linfield University won the team title, scoring 287 points. 
 
On the men's side, PLU placed fifth with 81 points, finishing four points shy of George Fox University and 27-points clear of sixth place Willamette University. 
The Lutes are back in the pool tomorrow, competing at the NWC Relays at the University of Puget Sound.
