TACOMA, Wash. –
Corey Solomon,
Hezekiah Goodwin and
Darius Chaffin all won individual titles at the PLU Open today to lead the Pacific Lutheran University men's track and field team in its first home meet of the season.
Darius Chaffin showed off his arm in the javelin, launching it 176' 9", to win the event. That mark is currently good enough for sixth in the country and more than 13 feet further than the effort he had last weekend at UPS. Chaffin added a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (15.61).
Reigning NWC Champion
Corey Solomon cleared 15' 1" to win the pole vault by nearly two feet. Solomon's height is good for fifth all-time in school history.
Hezekiah Goodwin started things off strong for the Lutes as he took the bronze in the day's first running event, the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:32.21). The senior also took the top spot in the 800 meters, clocking a 1:56.23.
Owen Ladinig continued the strong showing for the Lute distance runners with a third-place effort in the 5,000 (15:24.75).
The 4x100 relay team of
Aiden Yost,
Keola Sanchez,
Alec Serrao and
Kellen Meade topped the podium after touring the course in 43.19. Sanchez also placed second in the 100 dash (11.15).
Masum Real took the bronze on the day in the shot put (47' 10 ½"), but his heave is one of the top marks in the country as he is currently fourth in the nation in the event.
Cooper Claxton was solid in the jumps for the Lutes, placing third in the triple (40' 6 ¼") and fourth in the long (20' 3").
Nathan Atkinson finished third in the high jump (5' 7 ¾").
PLU will be back in action next Saturday in the Emerald City when they head to Seattle Pacific University.
