Downey Shatters School Record at Oregon Twilight

Results

EUGENE, Ore. — Madison Downey leaped into the record books on Friday afternoon, shattering a school record that stood for over 30 years as the Pacific Lutheran University track & field team sent a small squad to compete at the Oregon Twilight Meet at historic Hayward Field.

"It was a good day today. The group we brought competed really well and we had some nice PR's and season best performances," said Head Coach Trey Henderson.

"Maddie doing what she did today was great to see, That jump had been coming and it's exciting to see her get the result she's been working towards."

Downey, the Northwest Conference Champion in the triple jump, still had more in the tank after capturing her second title in the past three seasons. The junior unleashed a record setting jump of 39 feet, four and one half inch on her sixth and final attempt of the day, placing second overall and first among collegiate competitors. Her mark currently stands as the 10th best jump in NCAA Division III this season.

Her jump was a half inch better than the previous record set by Tracy Fox in 1994 with Downey becoming just the second ever Lute to eclipse the 39 foot barrier. Downey finished only behind Ryann Porter, who won the event. Porter was competing unattached and finished third at the US Indoor Championships and 16th at the World Indoor Championships this winter.

Abi Caprye cleared a personal best 5' 4 ¼" in the high jump, inching into eighth on PLU's all-time list and finishing third overall at the meet. Ki Neir cleared 12' 0 ½" to finish sixth in the pole vault with Tajanai Huff seventh in the discus (114' 6").

Bridger Hanis was fourth in the high jump, clearing a personal best 6' 4 ¾" while George Sonko was seventh in the discus (143' 3"). Chace McSherry finished eighth in the hammer throw with a personal best 132' 10" while Seth Kramer was ninth in the long jump. (21' 1 ½").

Kira Marshall ran a personal best time in the 100-meters, blazing down the straightaway in 12.42 seconds with D'Yhana Clemons 11th in 12.83.

On the track side for the men, Kaden Watts was 18th in the 100-meters in 11.34 with Jack Erickson 15th in the 200-meters (23.18).

"Next week is another opportunity to end the season on a high but our student-athletes are continuing to get better at this late stage and that's what we always hope to see."

The Lutes compete on Thursday in Newberg, Oregon at the George Fox Final Qualifier which is PLU's final competitive meet before the field for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships is announced.
