NEWBERG, Ore. - Na'inoa Loo won the 1,000-yard freestyle and the Lutes won the 400-yard medley relay but it wasn't enough to match the depth of Northwest Conference rival George Fox UNiversity on Friday night with the Pacific Lutheran University men's swimming program falling 138-53 to the Bruins.
Charlie Cutter,
Devin Stanley,
Tyler Tanaka, and
Ben Thompson made a splash in the opening event of the evening, winning the 400-yard medley relay in three minutes, 49.67 seconds.
Loo followed up the medley relay win with a victory of his own in the 1,000-yard freestyle, edging out teammate
Charlie Cutter for the top spot by a split second. Loo clocked a time of 11:05.2 in the distance swim with Cutter touching the wall moments later in 11:05.57. Loo would later place runner-up in the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.20).
"We've had a great week of training and it definitely showed against the Bruins tonight. GFU has a sizable and strong depth chart but the Lutes were up to the challenges thrown at them," said Head Coach
Andrew Lum.
"There were numerous close battles and the Lutes were able to gut out the hard fought wins against some mighty Bruin swims. Kudos to all the swimmers tonight on both sides for making this an electrifying race experience."
Stanley was runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.61 and the 100-yard freestyle (49.00) while Thompson was second in the 50-yard freestyle (24.02). Tanaka clocked the fastest time in the 1,000-yard freestyle as an exhibition swimmer before placing second in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:10.50.
"We're excited to see some people really come out of the woodwork tonight. Charlie flexed his backstroke and distance free prowess tonight, a very different avenue from his traditional sprint events."
PLU (1-7, 1-6 NWC) closed out the meet with a second place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:30.30).
"It's an exciting thought to see how the Lutes will perform next weekend against UPS on our senior day! Another tough ask but we feel confident they will have a strong answer."
The Lutes return home next Saturday for their final dual meet of the season, hosting intracity rival University of Puget Sound at 1 p.m.
