POST FALLS, Idaho – The Pacific Lutheran University men's golf team improved by 35 strokes on Sunday at the Northwest Conference Spring Classic. The Lutes finished in a tie for sixth as a team after firing a two-day total of 635.
"We put ourselves behind the eight ball with our poor effort on day one," said PLU Head Coach
Tyler Copp. "The conditions were really tough in round one and I know we learned some valuable lessons from that. Round two was a much different story. All four scores being under 80 was an expectation that we met. Hunter's 72 and Josh Clogston's 73 helped lead the way."
The reigning NWC Freshman of the Year, sophomore
Joshua Clogston finished the 36-hole event with a team-high five birdies and a four-over 148 to finish in a tie for 10
th.
Hunter Olson produced the best round of the weekend for PLU, finishing Sunday's round with an even-par 72 after he finished with three birdies on the front nine. Olson recovered from an 84 on Saturday to finish in a tie for 22
nd.
Koen Solis and
Cole Van Duyn also competed for PLU. Solis shot a 76 for the Lutes on Sunday to finish in a tie for 33
rd, while Van Duyn's best round was a 79 to finish in a tie for 37
th.
"It's obvious that we are struggling to keep levelheaded come tournament time so that's something that we will need to focus on improving," said Copp. "In addition, our putting was very poor and I know the guys are eager to get back on the greens. Thankfully we'll have some time between now and the conference championship."
PLU will take next weekend off before competing at Oakbrook Golf Club in Lakewood against the University of Puget Sound on April 15.
