WALLA WALLA, Wash.--Tyler Tanaka won two events on Friday night but the Pacific Lutheran University men's swimming team was unable to keep pace with Northwest Conference rival Whitman College on Friday night, falling 132-53 in the squad's first dual meet since November.
Tanaka teamed up with
Khosbayar Amgalan,
Na'inoa Loo, and
Devin Stanley to win the opening event of the meet with the quartet finishing the 200-medley relay in one minute, 40.02 seconds.
Tanaka won return to the podium later in the meet, winning the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.15.
The Lutes' 200-yard freestyle relay squad of Amgalan,
Dylan Dang, Tanaka, and Stanley finished second overall, clocking a time of 1:31.97.
Third place finishers for PLU included
Aidan Koshinsky in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.67) and 500-yard freestyle (5:17.14), Amgalan in the 50-yard freestyle, and Dang in the 100-yard butterfly (54.80).
"Initially, we were very concerned about the travel with weather projections, but we had the good fortune of making the journey to Eastern Washington safely today," said Head Coach
Andrew Lum.
"We thank Whitman for their flexibility and patience as we worked through the process of getting to compete today. Despite the long travel, and the brutal training block we've had since the New Year, we had some very surprising results tonight. As always, the Lutes shined best where we always do; through our presence, energy, and grit. Whitman is a powerhouse in our conference, and they showed that in every way tonight. We are very proud of the Lutes' ability to navigate the adversities we faced today. This will set us up well against a very skilled and honed team in Whitworth tomorrow."
Friday's meet was the Lutes' (3-3, 3-1 NWC) first competitive meet since placing fourth at the Bruin Invitational on December 3 and was the squad's first NWC dual meet since edging George Fox University 110-93 back on Nov. 18.
PLU's back in the chlorine tomorrow afternoon, facing Whitworth University at 1 p.m. in Spokane, Washington.
