TACOMA, Wash. — The Pacific Lutheran University men's swimming team was back inside the friendly confines of the PLU Pool for the first time since November on Friday evening, winning a pair of events but coming up short 128-64 to Northwest Conference rival Linfield University.
"It's nice to resume home competitions with the comforts of our pool. We're in the middle of a tough training block prior to our championships, and anything can happen at this time. You'll have people that can really go for it under the fatigue, and some that need that rest to see the fruits of their labor," said Head Coach
Andrew Lum.
"Linfield is a perennial top 3 competitor, and they really proved that tonight. We had some great races, and some well-earned wins from the Lutes. This meet was a good reminder that everyone is going to show up with their best game faces in February at our championships. We look forward to see how the Lutes perform against Pacific tomorrow."
The Lutes started off the meet with a bang, winning the 200-yard medley relay.
Devin Stanley,
Tyler Tanaka,
Khosbayar Amgalan, and
Ben Thompson teamed up to post a winning time of one minute 39.65 seconds.
Na'inoa Loo tallied the Lutes' (3-5, 3-3 NWC) other win on the evening, edging out Linfield's (2-2, 2-2 NWC) Ivan Tontchev by a tenth of a second to win the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.81.
Amgalan logged a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 1:53.19 with Stanley close behind in third (1:56.95). Tanaka took second billing in the 50-yard freestyle by the slimmest of margins, finish two tenths of a second behind the winner after stopping the clock in 22.67. Tanaka later tallied another second place finish, this time in the 100-yard backstroke (59.79).
Dylan Dang placed runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly in 55.05 with Loo third in 55.05. PLU again went 2-3 in the 100-yard freestyle with Stanley (51.63) runner-up and
Ben Thompson a split second back in third (51.92).
Aidan Koshinsky took second billing in the 500-yard freestyle, covering the distance in 5:26.89 while the Lutes' 200-yard freestyle relay team of Amgalan, Dang, Koshinsky, and Thompson closed out the meet with a runner-up showing in 1:32.34.
