Fisher and Matelski Lead Lutes to Seventh Place Finish

SALEM, Ore. --- The Pacific Lutheran University Women's Golf team competed in their largest tournament of the spring over the St. Patrick's Day weekend, taking seventh place out of nine teams. Freshman Abby Matelski led the Lutes after two rounds of competition, earning yet another top-20 finish to her resume.

Matelski, consistently toward the top of the lineup week in and week out for the Lutes, opened the tournament with an eight-over 80, featuring two birdies in the opening round. Matelski was trailed by senior Emily Fisher who has battled with the freshman at the top of the roster. Fisher made 10 pars and one birdie in the opening round, but an eight on one hole would result in an 82 in the first round.

Senior Ava Edmonds played her way into the Lutes lineup, firing an opening round 89 where she made one birdie and five pars. Freshman Kathleen Pullin rounded out the team score for the Lutes on Saturday, shooting a 93. Ashley Nguyen was close behind with a 95. The Lutes shot a team score of 344 in the first round and sat in fifth place after 18 holes.

Fisher and Matelski showed their consistency as Fisher led the team in the second round with a nine-over 81. Fisher made one birdie in the final round, paired with nine pars and just two holes worse than bogey. Matelski shot a team-best 38 on the back nine of round two on her way to a ten-over 82. The DuPont, Wash. native also had just two holes with worse than bogey in the final round. Matelski edged Fisher for the team best rounds, as she finished at 162 and Fisher closed with 163.

Edmonds once again held the third best score on Sunday, shooting a 91 and adding another birdie to her car. Nguyen made her score part of the team total on Sunday, shooting a 95 with a three-over 39 on the back nine. Pullin wrapped her tournament up with a 101.

PLU  dropped to seventh place after a 349 in the second round, finishing ahead of Northwest Conference foes Willamette and Linfield.

The Lutes will take a pair of weekends off to prepare for the Northwest Conference Spring Classic hosted at The Home Course on Sunday and Monday, April 7th and 8th, in DuPont, Wash.
