PORTLAND, Ore. — Georjina Soliai uncorked a personal best throw to win the shot put on Saturday, one of several members of the Pacfiic Lutheran University women's track & field program to put up big marks at the Larry Byerly Invitational hosted by Lewis & Clark College.
"This weekend was a good final tune up for conference. We added a few more qualifiers and had some performances that are peaking at the right time," said Head Coach
Trey Henderson.
Soliai bested the 39-competitor field in the shot put with a winning toss of 43 feet, three inches. It was a toss that currently ranks as the 21st best in NCAA Division III this season and easily won the event, going almost a foot further than runner up Marliyn Ramirez-Carmona (42' 3 1/2") from Division II Western Oregon University. Soliai's toss is also the third best shot put throw in PLU history. Finishing three spots back was younger sister
Alicia-Ellalynn Soliai with a throw of 38' 1 1/2".
Eva Wirth was seventh in the hammer throw with a toss of 143' 9" while Alessandra Valmonte was eighth with a mark of 141' 1". In the discus,
Virginia Arthur was ninth overall, unleashing a throw of 118' 9".
Abi Caprye was fifth in the high jump, clearing 4' 11 3/4" with
Kaylie Bracy and
Cheyanne Hicks tying for eighth (4' 9 3/4").
Kyleigh Archer was sixth in the triple jump (35' 0 1/4") and 11th in the long jump (15' 8 1/4").
On the track,
D'Yhana Clemons was 15th in the 100-meters in a personal best time of 13.04 seconds.
Zoey Holt had personal best times in both the 800-meters (2:28.57) and 1,500-meters (5:17.21) while
Anna Iverson posted a personal best in the 1,500 as well, circling the oval in 5:07.09. PLU's 4x100-meter relay team was fifth overall, clocking a season-best time of 51.72.
"There are always ups and downs during a championship meet. The physical prep is done and the most important thing will be our mental approach. As a staff we are excited to watch this team compete and embrace the competition over two days!"
The Lutes return to Oregon on Friday for day one of the 2024 Northwest Conference Championships hosted by George Fox University.
