NEWBERG, Ore. — Harper Canessa won a pair of events, helping the Pacific Lutheran University women's swimming team open up the Northwest Conference dual meet slate on Saturday with a convincing 142-99 victory over host George Fox University.

Saturday's meet was a triangular meet with both the Lutes and University of Puget Sound competing head-to-head with host George Fox. The meet had an added twist with events five through 25 was a mystery to the student-athletes of what event they were swimming until they stepped onto the blocks.Â

"Today was all about getting outside of their comfort zone. With the mystery of not knowing what they were going to compete in, regardless of primary or non-primary events, it all came down to the purest form of racing," said Head Coach
Andrew Lum.
"This was a great opportunity for the Lutes to see that they're more versatile and competitive than their 'normal' lineups."

Canessa made her NWC debut in style, taking the top spot in the 50-yard backstroke in a time of 29.27 seconds before taking the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:09.20.Â

Kei Nishikawa won the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 1:03.15 while placing second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:33.72.Â

Emma Gassman bagged runner-up finishes in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.71) and the 200-yard freestyle (2:06.60) while also getting a pair of second place finishes from
Riley Maher. Maher was second in both the 200-yard individual medley (2:19.62) and 50-yard freestyle (25.97).Â

PLU also had runner-up finishes from
Lola Chargualaf,
Anna Haneda,
Julia Lorenzo,
Keira Iwamoto, and the 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:46.63). Chargualaf was second in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:05.29 while Haneda was second in the 100-yard freestyle (58.98). Lorenzo achieved her runner-up finish in the 50-yard butterfly (29.06) while Iwamoto was second in the 50-yard breaststroke (36.42).Â

The Lutes return to the pool next Saturday, hosting Lewis & Clark College at 11 a.m.
