Smith Shares Experience at NCAA Student Immersion Program

Pacific Lutheran University track & field student-athlete LeBron Smith shares his experience at the NCAA Division III Immersion Program which was held in Nashville, Tennessee during the annual NCAA Convention this January. Smith was one of two Lutes to earn a spot in the program along with football's Josh Holder. It marked the first time PLU has two student-athletes represent the University at the same convention.

When I first found out I'd been selected to attend this year's NCAA Convention in Nashville as part of the Division III Student Immersion Program, I was excited, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous. As someone

preparing to graduate this spring, stepping into a space filled with experienced professionals and leaders in collegiate athletics was intimidating.

On top of that, I found myself battling a bit of impostor syndrome. I kept wondering, "Do I really belong here? Will I have anything meaningful to contribute to these conversations?"

It felt surreal to be part of such a prestigious gathering. But from the moment I arrived, I realized I wasn't alone. Many of my peers shared the same feelings, and the environment was more welcoming than I ever imagined.

A turning point for me came when we had the chance to hear from Will Baggett, an international keynote speaker. He addressed us directly, saying, "I know someone might be feeling like you don't belong in this room or even questioning why you were selected. Stop feeling like that. You all deserve to be here, and if that wasn't the case, you wouldn't be here."

His words hit me hard and changed everything. I felt my nervousness dissolve into confidence. My negative self-talk shifted into positive affirmations, and even my posture changed as I carried myself with a newfound sense of assurance.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the experience was meeting other Division 3 student-athletes from across the country. We bonded over shared stories and experiences, and I was able to build meaningful and lasting relationships. These connections reminded me of the strong community that Division 3 fosters, one rooted in shared values, resilience, and personal growth.

Throughout the convention, I participated in multiple professional development sessions that focused on maximizing resources, networking, and making the transition from being a student-athlete to a working professional. Each session was filled with practical advice and meaningful conversations that broadened my perspective on life after graduation.

By the end of the event, I left Nashville with more than just knowledge, I left with confidence, connections, and a renewed belief that I belong in this space and that I now see a future for myself working in sports. I am very grateful to have had this opportunity and i hope to have another similar experience, in hopes I get to attend this year's NCAA Career in Sports Forum.
