IRVING, Texas — The Pacific Lutheran University men's golf team inched up one spot on the leaderboard after Tuesday's final round, beginning the spring portion of its schedule with an eighth place showing at the Crusader Cup at Hackberry Creek Country Club.
"We had a wind advisory today in Dallas and the conditions were very difficult," said Head Coach Al Patterson.Â
"We were off to a great start but struggled to keep it going in the wind. I think we identified our weaknesses and know what we need to work ongoing into the Willamette tournament in a couple of weeks. I still have high hopes for out team and I'm confident we will be competitive the remainder of the season."
The Lutes concluded the two day tournament with a team score of 659, placing eighth overall and finishing just eight strokes short of fifth place in a 13-team field that featured team's from both NCAA Division II and III. PLU sat ninth overall after shooting a 326 during Monday's opening round. The Lutes added strokes on Tuesday with a 333, but it was enough to make a move up the standings, supplanting Hardin-Simmons University who finished 10th overall (325-351).
McMurray University (Texas) won the team title, shooting a 638 (317-321) with Swarthmore College (Pa.) was second with a tally of 639 (315-324).

Soren Bostrom paced the Lutes, shooting a 164 for the tournament to finish in a three-way tie for 20th place. Bostrom carded a 79 on Monday before shooting an 85 during Tuesday's final round, collecting two birdies and nine pars during round one and shooting one birdie and six pars during round two.
Koen Solis was one stroke back in 23rd, shooting a 165. Solis had seven pars and one birdie in round one, shooting an 80 before collecting three birdies and four pars in Tuesday's round of 85.Â

Tanner Frinell and
Tyler Maag finished one stroke back of Solis is 24th overall, making it four Lutes dotting the top 25. Frinell shot an 84 on Monday and an 82 on Tuesday while Maaf carded an 85 on day one before shaving off four strokes on Tuesday with an 81.Â

Luke Butler rounded out the Lute competitors, placing 38th with a 169 (83-86).Â
Dawson Dunlap from Division II Southern Nazarene University (Okla.) won medalist honors, shooting a 146 (69-77) finishing with a three stroke lead on the rest of the field.
The Lutes return to action on March 14, heading to Salem, Oregon for the Willamette Valley Cup.Â
