TACOMA, Wash. — The Pacific Lutheran University track & field teams closed out the PLU Open on Saturday, capitalizing on better weather as the Lute throwing crew competed across three events.

"It was nice to have some good weather today to compete and end the weekend," said Head Coach
Trey Henderson.

"I thought there were some good performances today. Still a lot of growth ahead for the throws group but I like how they're competing."

Sandra Valmonte finished runner-up in the hammer throw and was the top D3 competitor. Valmonte uncorked a toss of 141 feet, six inches `in her first attempt of finals, finishing only behind event champion Mara Parks from Western Washington University.
Tajanai Huff was ninth overall with a toss of 112' 10".Â

Taylor Kenaston was fourth in the javelin, unleashing a toss of 78' 0" while
Ki Neir was seventh with a toss of 65' 8".

On the men's side,
George Sonko placed sixth in the shot put with a heave of 44' 6" while
Griffin Montana tallied an eighth place showing with a throw of 42' 3 1/2".

Trevor Coble was fifth in the javelin with a mark of 151' 9", achieved on his sixth and final attempt of the day. Placing ninth was
Jake Wood with a toss of 4143' 9".
The running and jumping events along with the hammer throw were all contested on Friday, a day that saw the Lutes battle the elements on a day with a consistent rain/snow mix. The PLU women won six events and the team title, scoring 230 points with crosstown rival University of Puget Sound runner-up in the team standings with a distant 130 points. The PLU men finished fifth overall with 64.5 points with Puget Sound claiming the men's crown with 112.5 points.Â
"We have another opportunity to compete at home next week and it should set up for some good results."
The Lutes will remain at home next weekend, hosting the Brad Moore Invitational. The format will be reversed from this weekend with select throwing events on Friday with running and jumping being conducted on Saturday.
