TACOMA, Wash. — The Pacific Lutheran University Athletic Department has elevated
Eddie Abellar and
Caroline Matelski to Co-Interim Head Coaches of the Lutes' men's and women's golf programs.
Both Abellar and Matelski are promoted to the role after serving as assistant coaches for the program. The duo move into the head coaching position after the departure of Tyler Copp who is heading to Seattle Pacific University where he will guide the Falcons' nascent women's golf program.
"I'd like to thank Tyler for his dedication to the men's and women's golf programs over the past two years. He's built a strong foundation for the program and has made a positive impact on our student-athletes in his short time at PLU, leaving the program in a better place than when he started," said Athletic Director Mike Snyder.
"We're excited to have Eddie and Caroline step up as Interim Co-Head Coaches for the remainder of the season. Both have considerable experience in the golf industry and it's an added bonus that they already have familiarity with our student-athletes in the program. It will make for a seamless transition so the Lutes can continue to compete at a high level this spring."
Abellar brings over 22 years of golfing experience to the Lutes, including serving as an assistant pro at McCormick Woods Golf Course in Port Orchard.
Abellar played collegiately for both Bellevue College and the University of Hawaii-Hilo before earning his degree from Washington State University. While at Bellevue, Abellar won the Centralia Invitational and placed 13th at the 2016 NWAC Championships.
Matelski brings considerable experience as a player, a golf pro, and as a coach. Matelski serves as a PGA Associate Professional at Meadow Park Golf Course. As a player, Matelski won the inaugural Washington State Women's Amateur Championship and has played in prestigious tournaments that include the Optimist Junior World, Girls Junior PGA Championship, USGA Girls' Junior Championship, and American Junior Golf Association events. Matelski played collegiately at the University of Washington.
Matelski's coaching resume includes a stint as the Head Coach at Steilacoom High School where she earned Coach of the Year accolades in her second season at the helm.
The Lutes are back in action this weekend with dual matches against crosstown University of Puget Sound. The women face the Loggers on Saturday with the men squaring off against UPS on Sunday.
